The Pulse of Sevierville’s Art Community

A Town Rooted in Tradition and Blooming in Creativity

Sevierville’s arts scene has deep roots, dating back to the late 1800s when artisans and craftspeople began gathering in the area to create and share their pottery, woodworking, weaving, and other talents.

Carpenter Lewis Buckner, a former slave, is a notable figure in Sevierville’s artistic heritage. In the late 1800s, he crafted Queen Anne and Italianate woodcarvings for the Riley H. Andes House, which was built in 1867 and renovated in 1880. A state historical plaque honoring his craftsmanship was dedicated there in 1999.

Today, you can admire Buckner’s beautifully ornate gingerbread woodworking and furnishings while visiting the Robert A. Tino Gallery, located inside the historic Andes home since 1992.

More than 100 years later, arts and culture are still going (and growing) strong in Sevierville.

Public Art Abounds in Sevierville

Among the most-loved local art in Sevierville is the bronze statue of internationally-known singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. Crafted by local artist Jim Gray, the statue of the iconic entertainer who grew up in Sevierville has graced the lawn of the Sevier County Courthouse since 1987 and is one of the most iconic photo stops for Downtown Sevierville visitors. Dolly loves the statue, too, considering it a most-prized recognition of her entire career. The Dolly Parton statue in Sevierville is featured on the Tennessee Music Pathways trail.

Two other sculptures joined the Dolly Parton statue in Downtown Sevierville in 2022:

  • Bertie the Bird Dog, created by artist Mary Ruden in remembrance of Dr. Massey’s beloved bird dog who used to deliver his daily bank deposits in the early 1900s; and

  • Tracks of Time, sculpted by local artist Brian Tomlinson from pieces of the original Smoky Mountain Railroad tracks that ran along Bruce Street until 1961.

Downtown Sevierville’s first mural, “Wings of Wander,” was completed in 2020 by artist Pinkie Mistry. The mural features monarch butterflies, symbolizing both the town’s position along the annual monarch migration path and Dolly Parton’s love for butterflies. The colorful interactive mural is among Sevierville’s most Instagrammable spots.

Other murals bringing vibrant color to Downtown Sevierville include:

  • The Pines Mural which features five famous entertainers who performed there – Roy Acuff, Archie Campbell, Dolly Parton, Jone Carter-Cash, and Chet Atkins.

  • Red’s Café Mural that depicts a small blonde child sitting at the counter at Red’s Café, a favorite eatery of Dolly Parton’s during her childhood.
