Best Fall Hikes in the Smoky Mountains: October 2024 Edition

Posted on October 9, 2024November 4, 2024

October is a prime time to experience the Smoky Mountains, as the region bursts into a vibrant display of autumn colors. The cooler temperatures and stunning fall foliage make it the perfect month for hiking. Here are some of the best hikes to enjoy the breathtaking fall scenery in the Smoky Mountains during October 2024.

1. Alum Cave Trail

The Alum Cave Trail is a must-do in the fall. This 5-mile round-trip hike offers a gradual climb that rewards hikers with stunning views of the fall foliage from the Alum Cave Bluffs. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue on to the summit of Mount LeConte, one of the highest peaks in the park, for even more spectacular views.

2. Andrews Bald

For a more accessible yet equally rewarding hike, Andrews Bald is a great option. This 3.6-mile round-trip hike starts from the Clingmans Dome parking area and leads you through a forested trail that opens up to a grassy bald. The views from the bald are especially magnificent in October, with the fall colors spreading out below in a vibrant tapestry.

3. Gregory Bald

Gregory Bald offers one of the best panoramic views in the Smokies, and it’s particularly stunning in the fall. The 11.6-mile round-trip hike is challenging but worth the effort. As you ascend, you’ll pass through forests ablaze with color, culminating in a breathtaking view from the bald at the top.

4. Mount Cammerer

If you’re up for a more strenuous hike, the trek to Mount Cammerer is well worth the effort. This 11-mile round-trip hike takes you to a historic fire tower that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. In October, the vistas are painted with the rich reds, oranges, and yellows of the season.

5. Rich Mountain Loop

Located near Cades Cove, the Rich Mountain Loop is an 8.5-mile trail that offers a quieter alternative to some of the park’s busier hikes. The trail provides a mix of open views and forested sections, all of which are bathed in the warm hues of fall. The loop also offers a chance to explore some of the park’s historic homesteads.

6. Chimney Tops Trail

Though short, the Chimney Tops Trail packs a punch with its steep ascent and incredible views. The 3.3-mile round-trip hike culminates in a rocky summit that offers sweeping views of the Smokies, which are particularly beautiful when framed by the vibrant fall foliage.

7. Grapeyard Ridge Trail

For those interested in combining history with their hike, the Grapeyard Ridge Trail is a great choice. This 7.6-mile trail winds through forests displaying brilliant fall colors and passes the remains of a historic steam engine, adding a unique touch to your autumn hike.

These trails offer a variety of experiences, from challenging climbs to easy strolls, all with the backdrop of the Smoky Mountains’ stunning fall foliage. Whether you’re looking for a short hike or a day-long adventure, October is the perfect time to explore the natural beauty of the Smokies.
