The Best Hiking Trails Near Sevierville for Summer Adventures

Posted on July 14, 2025August 22, 2025

There’s a reason they’re called the Great Smoky Mountains. As the summer sun warms the air, a magical blue haze settles over the rolling peaks, and the ancient forests come alive. Summer in the Smokies means warm mornings, quick pop-up showers, and big rewards for hikers who plan well. From your home base in Sevierville, you can choose shady creek walks, waterfall hunts, and high-elevation vistas that can run 10 to 20 degrees cooler than town.

Whether you’re looking for a gentle riverside stroll or a heart-pumping climb, the trails of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park offer an unforgettable experience. Here is your guide to the best summer hikes near Sevierville.

Smart Summer Hiking: Safety & Planning in the Smokies

A little preparation goes a long way in the mountains. Before you go, know that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park requires a paid parking tag for any vehicle parked for more than 15 minutes. You can purchase a daily, weekly, or annual tag online or at visitor centers.

Weather moves fast here. Start your hikes early to beat the heat and the common afternoon thunderstorms. Carry plenty of water, salty snacks, and a rain layer, even on a blue-sky morning. Be aware that you are a visitor in the home of black bears; keep a safe distance of at least 50 yards, store food properly, and never feed wildlife. To protect the park’s ecosystem, dogs are not permitted on most trails. Finally, help us keep the mountains beautiful for everyone by practicing ‘Leave No Trace’ principles and packing out everything you pack in.

Easy & Family-Friendly Hikes

If you’re searching for the “nearest hiking trails to me” upon arriving in Sevierville, your adventure can start right in town on the Sevierville Greenways. These paved, riverside paths are perfect for a breezy warm-up or a stroller-friendly outing along the Little Pigeon River.

For a true Smokies sampler close to town, head to the beautiful Greenbrier section of the park. The Porters Creek Trail is a gentle, shaded forest walk that follows a cool, rushing creek. A two-mile round trip takes you past mossy boulders and historic farm sites. If you feel adventurous, you can continue on to see Fern Branch Falls at about the four-mile mark. For the quickest waterfall win, the short, shady stroll to Cataract Falls near the Sugarlands Visitor Center is a perfect choice for families with small children.

Planning Note: The Laurel Falls Trail is Closed in 2025

Please be aware that the popular Laurel Falls Trail is undergoing a major rehabilitation project and will be closed for the entirety of 2025. We recommend exploring the wonderful alternatives listed in this guide for your waterfall adventures this year.

Moderate Hikes for Rewarding Views

For those seeking more of a challenge, the Smokies offer some of the most iconic trails in the Southeast. The 2.6-mile roundtrip hike to Grotto Falls is a summer favorite because the trail actually slips behind the waterfall’s cool, misty curtain—a perfect mid-morning cool down.

Another classic is Abrams Falls, located inside the Cades Cove loop. This five-mile roundtrip hike travels through a beautiful forest to a powerful, high-volume 25-foot cascade. While the pool is scenic, please do not attempt to swim here; the current is deceptively strong and dangerous.

If you prefer mountain vistas, the Alum Cave Bluffs trail is a spectacular choice. This 4.4-mile roundtrip hike feels epic, with stone stairs, narrow archways, and incredible long-range views from beneath a massive rock overhang. For a different kind of panorama, take the Forney Ridge Trail from the Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome) parking area. The 3.6-mile roundtrip hike to Andrews Bald descends to a beautiful grassy field with sweeping views of the Smokies.

Strenuous Treks for Seasoned Hikers

Experienced hikers can chase the park’s tallest waterfall by taking the Ramsey Cascades Trail in Greenbrier. This is a tough, eight-mile roundtrip journey with over 2,000 feet of elevation gain on rugged terrain. Your reward is the breathtaking 100-foot cascade and the serene beauty of the old-growth forest. Start this one at dawn and bring plenty of water. For a beautiful streamside ramble, consider the Middle Prong Trail in the Tremont area. While the grade is gentle, the full eight-mile roundtrip hike to Indian Flats Falls is a workout in the summer heat, offering nonstop cascades and lush scenery.

Exploring Cades Cove & Scenic Overlooks

Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains is a must-see, and you can enhance your summer visit by planning around its Vehicle-Free Wednesdays. From June 18 through September 24, 2025, the 11-mile loop is closed to motor vehicles, allowing for a peaceful day of cycling or walking. It’s a fantastic way to reach the Abrams Falls trailhead without worrying about traffic.

If you simply want the views without the long hike, the Sevierville, TN scenic overlooks are world-class. Drive to the Newfound Gap Overlook on the Tennessee-North Carolina state line for cool temperatures and a horizon of endless ridgelines. For the ultimate 360-degree panorama, continue up the road to the observation tower at Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome), the highest point in the park.

Your Smoky Mountain adventure awaits, and Sevierville is the perfect place to begin and end your day on the trail.
